White Collar Criminal Defense Since 2006
Orlando
Orlando is the epicenter for tourist attractions in Florida. Hundreds of thousands of people flock to Orlando each year to enjoy Disney’s theme park attractions as well as the variety of others scattered throughout the area. While it is well known as a tourist destination offering a multitude of amusement parks and tourist attractions, it is not as well known for its high crime rate. Even though the rate has fallen since 2010, the rate of violent crimes is still two times higher than the Florida average and the national average. According to statistics pulled from the FBI statistics, aggravated assaults and property crimes are two areas that continue to plague this city.
Orlando Cases
The Swartz Law Firm specializes in a wide range of areas in criminal law. One in particular is white collar crimes. These type of crimes involve misrepresentation or deceit which under certain circumstances becomes a criminal act. The following is an example of this type of crime, pulled from the United States Attorney’s Office.
On May 7, 2013, a federal jury found Ibrahim Issa guilty of conspiring to possess and pass counterfeit money. According to testimony and evidence, the defendant agreed to hold almost $10,000 in counterfeit $100 bills at his small business in Orlando. He was instructed by a co-conspirator to give the money to a “family friend” who would pass it on to someone else in the Tampa/Sarasota area. The U.S. Secret Service discovered the scheme when one of the defendant’s employees stole some of the counterfeit cash to use for himself. Issa was indicted and later found guilty. He will be sentenced later this year. He faces a maximum penalty of five years in federal prison.
Another example from the U.S. Attorney’s Office demonstrates that all sorts of crimes are committed in this part of Florida, not just violent and property crimes.
On September 20, 2012, Orlando resident Coriolant was found guilty of child sex trafficking. The resident established a sexual relationship with a 14 year old girl, referred to as R.V. The man forced the girl to work as a prostitute in the Orlando area. Over the course of a year, he traveled with R.V to different cities to exploit her. The defendant was finally arrested, along with the minor. He was found guilty thanks to an overwhelming amount of evidence, in the form of bank accounts and telephone conversations that showed he profited from the young girl’s exploitation.
